HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Police are investigating the suspicious death of a toddler in a Henrico neighborhood. This is unfolding in the 4900 block of Farrell Court. That's not far from Parham Road.

Police said that examination of the body at the scene revealed massive injuries.  The boyfriend of the mother, Kevin Meredith Lucas, 45, was interviewed and subsequently arrested and charged with first degree murder.

The body of the child was transported to the medical examiner's office for further evaluation.

Family members tell us the child was only 3 years old. The call came in around 6:30 Thursday night as a medical emergency. After EMS crews arrived the child was pronounced dead.

The scene inside the home had Henrico police officers calling this death suspicious but they needed to wait before they can go back inside the home to gather more evidence.

"Basically we secure the area and investigators as in any scene like this get a search warrant to go back in and start collecting evidence," said Henrico Police Lt. Gary Watson.

Henrico police officers questioned neighbors and witnesses at the scene and at police headquarters. Family members said they have no idea how the child died.
