RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Four former Ukrop's stores are now Martin's. The week-long conversion at these locations is over. The Martin's in Short Pump opened at 8 this morning to a ribbon cutting and crowd of people who couldn't wait to get inside to get a look.

The Martin's name on the front of the building is the first sign of change.

"I'm excited. I'm just curious to see how it's going to look and see what's changed. What's different? See how the service is," said resident Jeff Sevenker.

And inside, curious shoppers filled the aisles.

"It's lain out nice, it's nice and clean. It's got lots of new things and I like it," shopper Joe McGregor said.

"When I came here growing up in this town I was trying to find what I thought was lacking before, where they made changes and where they made changes, I'm really impressed," resident Preston Hall said.

Shoppers noted today, that the new lights from above, make the store seem brighter. The aisles were extended making room for more products.

"We've had people working around the clock for the last week and it's just been exciting. It really has been exciting," said Martin's Regional Vice President Jim Scanlon.

Scanlon led members of the media on a tour of the transformed store. He says they've added refrigerated carts, making the produce section 20 percent bigger. The Food Club brand is now gone, replaced by Giant Foods. He says the organic and natural food sections are also bigger, and sell the new brand Nature's Promise.

All of the stores also have price checking stations where you can find out where an item is located and also how much it costs. And then there's the beer and wine section.

"It's been well received. A lot of the customers that have come in this morning have actually just sought out this aisle just to see what we have," Scanlon said.

And for all that is different, it appears there's plenty that's still the same. Dickies still supplies the seafood.

"All of these products here are all the great tasting Ukrop's bakery items. That we're going to continue to carry," he said.

Ukrop's baked goods, kitchen selection and salad bar are still the same. And the Ukrop's name is still featured on the outside of the building.
