RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond police are looking for the men who robbed a Chinese food delivery driver last night on the city's south side. It happened on Perry Street around 9 o'clock.
Harry Davis is new to the neighborhood- he just moved into a house on Perry Street. He shares the block with a handful of homes, some undergoing renovations in an attempt to turn things around.
"If we could change the people like we change the buildings, it would be great," said Davis.
Thursday night's robbery was a step backward. It started when a Chinese food delivery driver showed up to drop off dinner. The address he was heading to turned out to be a vacant house. Police say it was a trap. At least two men with guns ordered him out of his car and robbed him.
The robbers got the driver's car, his cash, and his cell phone. He couldn't even dial 911. That's when he ended up on Harry Davis' doorstep.
"I was in bed, and suddenly a lot of knocking was at the door- very loud, very hard," he said.
Not knowing what to expect, harry didn't open the door. He did manage to figure out what was happening.
"I said what I could do for you is call 911. He said please, call 911! Call 911! I've been robbed!"
Squad cars soon arrived, and officers began taking statements. The driver was not hurt. Harry says he's glad, but he regrets not opening the door right away.
"I came from an area where we trust everybody. Opening the door would never be a problem," he said. "I'm just sorry I couldn't do more to help a person, let him in or whatever. I had to be somewhat cautious."
He hopes it doesn't always have to be this way, and that his new neighborhood will clean up its act. Police say they've already received some good tips from the community. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
