RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Monroe Park on the VCU campus is full of students sitting enjoying the hot sun before their next class. But thieves see them as prey and are swiping laptops left unattended.
"It's been similar to a purse snatching but it's been laptops," said VCU Police Corporal James DeFord. "There's an unknown suspect that approaches quickly, snatches it, takes off again. We have a limited description and there was possibly a gray vehicle involved."
VCU police have received 3 reports of laptop snatchings this week alone. Word of the incidents has spread quickly through the campus, now students are on alert.
"I just keep it close to me and make sure my eyes are on it," said VCU sophomore, Catelyn Kelsey. "I mean I change a song every once in a while so my eyes are on it most of the time."
And while in those three incidents the thief got away, "I would chase them down and get it back," said Kelsey.
"We have stepped up our enforcement presence in the areas of concern," said DeFord. "We also utilize plain clothes officers and we've done processes in the past where we've put our own equipment out as bait."
Police believe the incidents could be related. They encourage all students to closely monitor their laptops and be aware of their surroundings when in the parks on campus.
