RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The last three days have been very busy for repair man Daniel Fogg. He's been clocking in a lot work hours, responding to emergency calls from folks air system problems. But it's nothing he hasn't seen before.
"Nasty filters, just neglect all around," said Daniel Fogg, A. William & Fogg.
The first tip is to check the air filter, because in some cases, it can clog up in a matter of days.
"This right here is kind of nasty," Fogg said as he showed us a used filter. "From the animals mostly, there's actually dog hair on there," he said.
And if your home is just not putting out air, don't bother turning the temperature down the only thing that will run is your utility bill.
"A lot of it is cleaning, neglect, just not seeing it right here we've got little bit of water in the pan, and that's coming from this tube being stopped up, somebody needs to blow that out, that's really all that is, you take that cap off and run bleach in it," said Fogg.
To call someone could get you a hefty bill.
"To have somebody come to your house, usually costs about $35 at least, and to do that, I'd have to put my nitrogen tank out and some other things, so you're looking at about a bill of $150 bucks," he said.
Fogg is also seeing systems ice up.
"What happens is when it gets low on Freon, maybe half a pound or so, it gets too cold, and it ices straight over," he said.
When that happens, turn off the system to let the ice melt, before calling someone. Because once you call a repair crew they'll typically charge while waiting for the air handler to defrost.
