RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – It's been a tough couple of years for local non-profits. Most have struggled to raise money while trying to meet demand for services.
In this economic environment the Children's Museum of Richmond is taking a bold step. The museum plans to open a second location at West Broad Village in Short Pump this June. An anonymous donor is helping to pay for the expansion with a $250,000 gift.
More than 200,000 children and their parents visit the downtown museum every year. Museum executives are betting they can serve even more people and raise more funds by adding a suburban location.
There is evidence this can work. The YMCA of Greater Richmond has successfully used this model for years.
But this expansion will be unique for a Children's Museum. It happens to be the first of its kind in the country, right here in Richmond, Virginia.
