CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - An elderly Chesterfield couple is out $30,000 dollars, victims of what started as a typical home repair scam. It happened in the 5500 block of Newbys Bridge Road and now neighbors are looking out for the suspects return.

Police are looking for two suspects - white men driving an older white Ford pick-up truck with a fiberglass cover over the bed with paving supplies. Police say this time of year, when the weather is nice and residents start thinking about home repairs, scammers are out too.

"They try to use some sort of distractionary technique to try and gain entrance to the person's house," said Officer Tim Lamb of Chesterfield County Police Department.

That's what happened to Raymond Baggett and his wife.

"The same guy has been here at least for the last 3 years trying to do this driveway and every time I tell him, I ain't doing it," Baggett said.

Baggett said he rejected $900 quote the two men gave him repave the driveway but did agree to let them fill some of the cracks. But when the guys started doing what seems like more than just fill the holes Baggett said he told the guys to stop working entirely. That's when the trouble started.

"He wanted to use the bathroom even before then, I made a mistake, I mean I ain't letting no stranger no more use my bathroom," said Baggett.

Baggett said while one of the guys distracted Baggett and his wife, the other slipped through the back door and stole $30,000 dollars cash.

"I don't know his name, I don't know his business address, I don't know where he lives, he didn't have nothing on his truck," he said.

Neighbors are furious.

"I think it's horrible, I think it's really sad for somebody to do something like that to an old person to anybody but especially an elderly couple," said neighbor Jennifer Elkins.

"I don't know, it really makes me sick, yeah it's a lot of money, I know I shouldn't have that much but it's my house and I got a right to do what I want and feel like," he said.

Baggett told me he believes one of the suspects had a small tattoo on his right shoulder. The white Ford truck the two men came in had sun visors on the sides with black and white stripes on them.
