RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - New healthcare legislation is being compared with social security, Medicare…and even civil rights. So what does this new law teach our children?

While its intent may be to protect those are not able to protect themselves, it in reality creates a whole new class of unprotected and excessively taxed citizens. The IRS already reports that 10% of us pay 78 percent of the taxes and 67 percent of us, according to a CNN poll, believe that our biggest challenge is deficit spending.

Well, the bills are growing…and so will taxes! On Sunday a friend, Frank Saunders, told a story about a small town in Virginia where wealth and poverty lived visibly on opposite sides of the street. The local Pontiac dealer had done quite well and lived in a beautiful house. It was the early 50's when the middle class was beginning to emerge and there was no greater symbol of "arriving" than a car. Each Sunday the Pontiac dealer and his wife would sit in their sunroom and watch families get into their cars and take a drive…this was true except for one family who could not afford a car.

On a Monday morning the Pontiac dealer walked across the street and knocked on the door of his less privileged neighbor. Frank's Mom went to the door and was greeted with "Here are the keys to a new green Pontiac…it's yours." "If you want to pay for it fine, but if you don't, that's ok. But you will never be without a car to take your family for a Sunday ride."

Congress uses a different approach…if you have worked hard and have more than one car, they will take one and give it to someone else…confusing both the "giver" and the "receiver"… Perhaps children should be taught generosity …rather than entitlement…and start with Congress…after all, they do take a recess.
