RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A young woman is stabbed and raped, and barely escapes thanks to help from a stranger. It happened on the 1800 block of Edwards Avenue. That's just off Jeff Davis Highway on Richmond's south side.

Neighbors in this Southside Richmond neighborhood are still in shock after a young woman was raped and stabbed behind one of the homes on this block. Francine Webster happened to be in the right place at the right time and helped the victim get away from her attacker.

"I heard somebody hollering and screaming saying 'help me please, help me please,' so I turned around and I had seen the little girl running from around the corner," said Webster. "As the closer she got to me I could see that she didn't have on any clothes."

Webster just happened to be walking down the street when it happened. She had the nearest neighbor call 911 while she got a shirt for the young woman to wear and tried to fix her wounds.

"I didn't know how deep it was because you could see the blood was running all the way down to her feet," Webster said.

And while this neighborhood may appear quiet during the day, neighbors here tell us that safety is their number one priority. They have ways to make sure something like this doesn't happen to them.

"If they come in I got something for 'em and what I got for 'em, I don't think they could accept it so, they come in walking they're going out a different way," said neighbor Carolyn Randolph.

Webster doesn't consider herself a hero though. She did what she could just to save another human being's life.

"I just tried to help her you know? It's a lot of things, bad things, happening to young kids out here today. I just tried to help her," said Webster. "We all look out for each other around here. Yep, we all look out for each other."

The suspect is described as a white male, between 18 to 20 years old. He was last seen wearing a lime green shirt and blue jeans and was riding a blue bike with the word "mountain" on it towards Fairfax Avenue. If you have any information about this incident you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.

The neighbor said the victim said she was just 19 years old. She has spoken with the victim's mother who says that she is recovering at a nearby hospital.
