RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)--Today river levels have dropped to 8 1/2 feet which means now all you need is a life jacket. Thursday the James River was about nine feet high, which required anyone who wanted to go out on the water to get a permit.

Right now, the James is still very brown and muddy--a sign that at lot of pollution is being flooded into the river.

As far as the parks that border it, potholes and some damage from winter storms need to be repaired.

But experts say all of the precipitation equals a lot more time in the river this summer before water levels get too low.

Keep this number handy if you want to check up on the water levels here as the weather gets nicer.  You can call, 646-8228 just dial the number "4" and listen for Richmond Westham.

Remember if the river rises higher than 9 feet, you need a permit.

Right now it's higher than 5 feet so you must wear a life jacket.
