HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Henrico police said a body has been discovered this morning in a lake in western Henrico County.
Henrico Fire and Henrico Police responded and the body of an Asian female was located in the lake. The female has been identified as Yan Fang Li, 53, of the 9000 block of Midway Road. The cause of death has been ruled a drowning, according to Henrico police.
She was reported missing by her family early this morning at 2:30 a.m. Mrs. Li's daughter stated that her mother had been missing since 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, and was known to walk around the neighborhood.
A witness stated that on Wednesday between 3:15 - 3:30 p.m. that she was passing the lake and saw a person in a gray hooded sweatshirt walking into lake with water up to her chest. The witness did not call police because she thought the person was trying to retrieve something from the lake.
This morning, one person spotted the body of Li in the lake around 7:45 a.m., according to police. A second person went into the lake in a kayak or canoe and pulled the body closer to shore.
Jason Clark is that second person. He was taking his kid to the bus stop on Thursday, when he said other parents and kids saw tennis shoes in the water. They knew right away, it might be a body.
Clark took a kayak and went into the water to only discover the body.
"You could tell, once you got out there, that she had been in the water for a whole and the body had weight. And, you could tell it wasn't a joke," says Clark.
Police have said that the body is a female. There had been a report of a missing person filed in that area last night, but at this point no connection has been announced.
The lake is at Lakeland Street and Maybeury Drive in the west end.
