VT president assures community is safe

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Extra police will be on hand at Virginia Tech Thursday after a possible attack is announced on the school. The threat is the latest in a series of warnings, but police don't think the threats are credible.

The e-mails - sent directly to students and university employees over the last few days - have come either from AOL accounts or fake Virginia Tech e-mail accounts. The FBI and state police believe they are coming from Italy.

Authorities think it's from the same person who made similar threats on Youtube earlier this month and back in October.

The president of Virginia Tech wrote a letter to the community, reassuring them saying, "all the indicators reviewed by law enforcement...do not point to an immediate threat."

It will be business as usual on campus Thursday.

University President Charles Steger says an over-abundance of caution is appropriate. He wants students to report concerns, but warns everyone not to be misled by rumors.
