HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) – Hopewell Police say two men are accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a teenage student. The reported crime happened while the girl was walking home from school.
Police say, the victim identified one of the attackers as 23 year old Jonathan Pegram. He faces a number of charges in connection to the crime, including abduction and sodomy.
The incident began in the 500 block of Jefferson Avenue. Investigators say, the 16 year old Hopewell High student was walking home from school yesterday afternoon when Pegram and another man jumped out of their car, grabbed the girl, and took off.
Gloria Martinez, who lives near the school, calls the situation horrifying.
"It's kind of scary because I have nieces that stay next door," said Martinez.
Police say, the suspects drove the victim a few miles to Cameron's Landing. A portion of the subdivision is under construction.
Police say, the two men took the victim to a remote section in the subdivision and sexually assaulted her. The victim managed to escape. Police say, she ran to the nearest home for help.
18 year old Elizabeth Rashaed says she's surprised to hear about the attack.
"I'm sorry to hear that, it's sad," said Rashaed.
Rashaed walks in the neighborhood where the reported crime happened.
"I'll be more cautious now. I'll tell other people to be more cautious when they go out. You got to be careful," said Rashaed.
Police say the high school student later identified Pegram, in a photo line-up, as one of her attackers. Pegram turned himself in at the Hopewell Police Department at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Pegram was arrested and transported to Riverside Regional jail where he is held under no bond.
