HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A Glen Allen grandmother is black and blue in the face after getting beaten up in her home.

It happened just before dawn Sunday, when a suspect invaded her home.

She is known as the "sweet lady and perfect neighbor." Now her neighbors are furious.

"To hear that somebody broke into her house and used her for a punching bag, yeah, let em try to come down here, I guarantee there's enough good ol' boys up in this neighborhood they'll be a payback if he comes back," said neighbor Nick Anderson.

Neighbors couldn't believe their Pearl Harper, was attacked.

It was a confusing scene on Longdale Avenue moments after Pearl and her grandson called the police early this morning.

Police say, a male suspect forced his way inside harper's home...attacked her...and then fought with her grandson who tried to come to his grandmother's rescue.

"It's unbelievable really, Ms. Harper is a caring and friendly and quiet 80ish lady and it just makes you feel uncomfortable," said neighbor Herbert Thompson.

Police say the grandson, pulled a handgun and shot the supect.

The suspect suffered a non life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower abdomen.

But as he recovers in the hospital, Harper is recovering at home.

She has a broken, swollen lip, bruises on her hands and forehead. It was clear she was badly hurt.

Harper's next door neighbor, June Anderson, says hearing the story breaks her heart.

"I'm always here for her, anytime she needs me, because I think a lot of Pearl, she's a very nice person," Anderson said.

Police say the motive appears to be a robbery, but tell us the suspect knew the grandson.

Police say they are waiting to interview the suspect -- who recovering in the hospital -- before any charges are filed.
