HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – A community is on high alert after a man was shot in the face while standing in his own home.
This all unfolded around eleven o'clock Thursday night in the 4900 block of Park Meadows Lane, that's in the Short Pump area.
Henrico Police say its unclear if the shooting was random or deliberate. The victim is 54 year old Terrance Nero. His family calls the incident, "insane."
Loved ones say Nero chatting with his mother, who was visiting, when the crime unfolded. They were in the kitchen -- then, gunfire. Family members say the bullet entered one side of Nero's cheek and came out the other side.
"It appears as though the suspect, or suspects were hiding outside the victim's home in his backyard just before the shooting," said Lt. Eric Owens.
News of the crime spread quickly through the Twin Hickory Community in Short Pump. One neighbor, who asked that we not reveal her identity, knows the victim.
"My husband plays poker with him he's a really nice pleasant person. I hope everything works out for him."
She says she was watching television last night when she heard a loud bang.
"It's scary. This neighborhood is really safe. So it makes me real nervous with a lot of kids in the area."
Police say seconds after the shooting a witness spotted someone running away from the scene. The victim is separated with three adult children. He's a property manager at a company in Glen Allen. Family members say Nero underwent one round of reconstructive surgery overnight and that at least 6 more surgeries are expected.
Meanwhile, neighbors and Nero's family say they're on alert -- concerned the shooter will return to their west end neighborhood. Nero is in critical but stable condition tonight at VCU Medical Center. If you have any information on this crime you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
