New management at Club Velvet as owner fights for liquor license

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A Shockoe Bottom strip club is under new management as the owner fights to get his liquor license back.

The new Club Velvet managers would not confirm whether Sam Moore sold the business but say Moore's role is changing. They also say people who visit Shockoe Bottom will notice a difference with the building. One business owner hopes it's more tasteful.

The days may be numbered for President Obama's picture and one banner at Club Velvet as well as owner Sam Moore. A man, who only goes by Jason, says he's one of the new club managers. But in bold lettering on the web site, RichmondAdultEntertainment, Jason and BriBri took ownership control Monday morning. The news comes as Moore appeals the state ABC board decision last month to revoke his liquor license.

An ABC spokesman says when a business with a liquor license is sold, the agency must be notified within 30 days of the sale's completion and they haven't heard of a sale or change in officers at Club Velvet.

"I can't say this is what he's doing, but other clubs that have gotten into trouble with ABC they will install new officers and owners kind of a way of maintaining the business," said David Napier, President of the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association.

One of the managers says not only will Moore's role in the business diminish, but major exterior changes are coming. Old signs will be taken down and new ones going up.

Napier said Moore has well-behaved patrons unlike some other clubs but wishes Velvet's concept was different with it being one of the first businesses to welcome visitors to the area.

"I think a lot of business owners in the Bottom wish it were more a discreet presence than he has down there. Coming right off the interstate like that with a gentlemen's club, signs some people find offensive, it would be nice if it kept a lower profile," said Napier.

The City of Richmond has no record of the property changing hands. The new managers say an announcement regarding the club may come at the end of the week. Meantime, a hearing date has not been set for Moore's appeal.
