NEWPORT NEWS (WWBT)--An officer was shot twice and his bulletproof vest is being credited for saving his life.

Around 11:30 Wednesday night three police officers approached a suspicious vehicle in the 400 block of manor road in the Woodview apartments.

As the officers got closer the suspect then shot at them, hitting one of them. They shot back and took cover.

The suspect drove off and then crashed several blocks away. Investigators say the driver was found dead shot in the upper body.

Police say another person was in the car at the time, but they aren't saying where he is.

The officer who was shot is in the hospital in good condition and is expected to be released later this morning.
