CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - In Chesterfield, a man who crashed his car and abandoned a toddler is still on the run tonight, but now an eye witness to the car accident is speaking out about what she saw.
At first, police didn't know why the couple took off running right after they crashed this morning. Police say the man wasn't wanted by the police. Well, now police have a reason to arrest him and that warrant is for child neglect.
Police say they found the little boy sitting next to the car in this ditch. Sherry Edwards was getting ready for work when she heard the crash, then saw police swarm her neighborhood.
"When I heard the impact when they hit, I thought they hit the tree, but when I looked out of the window they were just in the ditch," said Sherry Edwards, witness.
At 6:30 in Wednesday morning police checked out a call about a suspicious vehicle on Bluff Side Road. When they approached the car, the driver sped off.
"He had to be doing at least 60 mph if not more. He was flying," said Edwards.
The short pursuit ended when the driver crashed into a ditch.
"It was just like a flash he flew by the window," she said.
The man and woman inside ran, leaving the little boy behind. Edwards couldn't believe her eyes.
"It's horrible. It's very irresponsible of the parent, very irresponsible," said Edwards.
Police say 25 year old Lynn Dexter Bailey Jr., the father of the little boy, was behind the wheel. Authorities scoured the area on foot and with K-9's for several hours but found nothing. The little boy is unhurt and with child services tonight. The woman has not been identified yet. If you know anything call Chesterfield County Police at 748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 748-0660.
