Philadelphia student dies after vehicle accident in Dinwiddie

DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) - State Police are investigating an overnight accident that left a Temple University student dead.

It happened on I-85 near the Route 40 exit.

Police say 21-year-old Kammini G. Ragoopath of Lansdale, Penn. died after being ejected from a passenger van.

Around 2:30 a.m. the driver of the van, 20-year-old Bilal Badruddin, was going south on I-85 with seven passengers.

Police say Badruddin ran off the left side of the road, struck the guardrail, overcorrected, drove of the right side of the road and struck the guardrail again before coming to a stop.

In the process Ragoopath and anther passenger were ejected from the vehicle.

Police say Ragoopath died at the scene.

The other ejected passenger was taken via helicopter to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries.

Police say both were not wearing seatbelts.

Badruddin and the remaining five passengers, who did use seatbelts, were taken to Southside Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Police say fatigue was a factor in the accident.

Badruddin faces reckless driving charges.

Police say the travelers are members of the Temple University Bhangra dance crew.

The group was traveling for a competition in Durham, N.C. from Philadelphia.
