Flag display battle: Lawmakers approve new bill

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Remember the Henrico Medal of Honor recipient who fought to fly an American flag from his front-yard pole?

Colonel Van Barfoot eventually won the battle against his homeowners association.

But a bill headed to Governor Bob McDonnell's desk aims to prevent that from happening to any other veterans.

The General Assembly passed a measure that would allow anyone who's part of a homeowners association to display the flag according to the U.S. flag code.

Homeowners associations would still be allowed to impose "reasonable restrictions."
