HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A new recreation center being built in Henrico. It's slated to be the largest facility of its kind in the county.
The Eastern Henrico Recreation center will be built along North Laburnum Avenue. It's located just south of Harvie Elementary School, and county leaders believe the location will make it very popular.
Frank Thornton, Fairfield District Rep, says, "It's going to bring prestige and honor to Eastern Henrico when it's been thought in the past that it has not been on the same par as other sections of the county."
About 10 years ago, citizens starting asking for a youth center in this area, and their voices were heard.
Frank says, "what I like about this whole process was it was not the county dictating downward, but it came from the people themselves as to what they wanted."
Instead of heavy machinery and a vacant lot, picture a full-sized gymnasium, a weight room and fitness center. And one day you'll see a multipurpose athletic field with a five-lane track, 400 seats, and a concession stand.
Plus, on top of serving Henrico county students and athletes, you can rent out the facility for special events like weddings, birthday parties and meetings. This nearly $14 million project is being funded through general obligation bond money. That money is in place and there's no danger of budget cuts.
To learn more about the future of the center, you can attend a meeting Wednesday night at 7 p.m. It will be held at the Eastern Henrico Government Complex on Nine Mile Road.
