RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The head of GRTC says he is shocked and dismayed over the union's rejection of his contract offer.
Last night members of the Transit Union Local 1220 voted to turn down a new contract. The disagreement was originally over pay.
Bus drivers wanted a raise, but management said the money just wasn't there.
GRTC leader John Lewis says the ball is now in the union's court.
This was his best and final offer.
"Our goal through this negotiation was to maintain the status quo, not have layoffs, and although we could not provide any salary or benefit increase we held the line and did not diminish anyone's salary or benefits," said John Lewis.
Buses are operating as normal today. A call to the union today was not returned.
