RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - It's been 50 years since VUU students demonstrated a lunch counter sit-in in Richmond, and Monday, the university is remembering that historic day.
50 years ago VUU students marched on Lombardy Street, down Chamberlayne Avenue, to Thalhimers department store on Broad Street.
They filled 34 seats at the lunch counter and waited to be served.
Many of those students returned to campus to take part in Sunday's ceremony where a commemorative marker was placed on campus.
And the anniversary events continue Monday at Richmond Center-Stage.
An historic marker will be dedicated at Sixth and Broad Streets.
The event begins at 2:30 P.M.
It's free and open to the public.
