RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - During the day the streets in Shockoe Bottom are quiet for the most part. And people we spoke with who live there have no reason to worry about their safety.
"I feel pretty safe," said one resident. "I do have a dog."
"I always feel safe," added another. "I just do I mean I see cops around all the time."
But just before 1 a.m. Thursday, a woman was sexually assaulted by a man with a gun.
"A gentleman approached a lady who was walking to her car, demanded money and then she was able to push her away but in doing so he kind of fondled her a little bit," said Shockoe Bottom neighborhood president, David Napier.
Napier doesn't like hearing of incidents like this one because he feels it brings down the image Richmond's entertainment district.
"We're a very safe neighborhood," added Napier. "We do have a lot of clubs so you know there's the perception. But the reality is we're safer than just about any other neighborhood in the city and have excellent police protection down here and this is a rare event."
Unfortunately police only have a vague description of the suspect. Despite a sense of security in an area not typically known for this type of activity residents are still careful when they go out at night.
"I usually just don't go out by myself late at night," said Bottom resident, LeeAnn Fenderson.
This incident is still under investigation right now but if you have any information that can help, contact Richmond Police.
