National Guard headed to northern Virginia

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)--Help is on the way to northern Virginia where National Guard troops have been laboring in heavy snow over the past couple of days.

A detachment out of Sandston is loading up to relieve their fellow guard members in Fairfax County with Humvees and five-ton vehicles loaded with equipment.

The Virginia National Guard started mobilizing once Governor McDonnell declared a state of emergency.

And while most of us think of guard members as soldiers, helping out their fellow Virginians is all part of the job.

The soldiers will be shuttling EMS workers around the state and helping stranded civilians get to emergency shelters.
