Here's our weekly update on bills in the General Assembly that affect local schools:

School Start Dates

Delegate Bob Tata of Virginia Beach has now sent his bill, which would have allowed schools to start before Labor Day, back to committee, basically to die. Governor McDonnell opposed the bill. Virginia requires schools to start after Labor Day unless they get a special waiver. Several lawmakers have proposed letting schools set their own start date, but so far none have passed.

School Nutrition

The Senate Education and Health Committee has also unanimously approved a bill to require the State Department of Health and the Board of Education to adopt nutrition guidelines for school meals. Senator George Barker of Fairfax proposed the bill to combat teen obesity. The board would have to submit guidelines by the end of 2012, and they would have to be implemented for the 2013-14 school year.
