RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – NBC12 spoke with several major supply stores like Walmart and Lowes all across the area today. Some had shovels and ice melt. Others didn't or were still waiting on shipments. If you are having trouble finding the things you need at a larger store, consider smaller locally owned businesses.
Twice this winter now we've seen shoppers scramble for snow supplies. In mid-December, food plus scrapers, shovels and ice melt flew off local shelves. Frequent snow isn't the norm in Richmond, so some people were still not prepared when another big snow fell for a second time over the weekend. If you are not finding what you need at a bigger store, check out smaller business. We found plenty of supplies at Harper Hardware in Shockoe Bottom.
"We have several pallets of ice melt in the back and several pallets of snow shovels. We got our emergency shipment in a couple days ago, and we are ready for this next big snow storm coming up," said Salesman Chas Harper.
Harper says they welcome snow because it brings them more foot traffic.
"We've had a lot of new customers come in and say we didn't know this place was here, and then they start looking around and say we'll have to come back for more stuff because we didn't know we had a local hardware store so close that we could use," said Chas.
It's simple but true; your best bet is to call before you head out to buy what you need. That way if the store is sold out you save yourself a wasted trip.
