CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - "His last words were, he dapped me up and said 'I'll see ya tomorrow'," said the victim's friend, Kelvin Thomas.
But unfortunately friends and family of Devon Mason will never see him again. The 19 year-old was shot and killed in his Chesterfield County home just after midnight Tuesday. His stepfather Peter Simpson is charged with second degree murder as those who knew him mourn his passing.
"I started crying. That wasn't the type of person, he wasn't that type of person to get into any trouble," said former co-worker, Tonya Robertson. "He was a great person to know loved by everybody."
One by one, former classmates and co-workers laid flowers and candles down in front of Devon's house. Most never expected a domestic situation to take the life of their friend.
"Last time I saw him was a couple years back at basketball practice and they just seemed happy," said Thomas. "Dad never seemed like tensions were between them."
"I didn't think it could happen…just…it opens your eyes," said friend, Jacob Crenshaw.
Mason was pronounced dead at VCU Medical Center. Police are still looking into how the teen's life could have ended so abruptly.
"Rest in peace man," said Crenshaw.
"I miss him and I love him," added Robertson. "He was the best friend that I ever had."
