HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Firefighters are on the scene of a 3-alarm fire at the Honey Tree Apartments in western Henrico County in the 1500 block of Split Oak Lane near Henrico Doctor's Hospital's Forest Avenue campus.

The fire broke out just before 1:30 p.m. Heavy smoke and fire were seen coming from building. Two people had to be rescued from third floor using a ground ladder.

This was a difficult fire to fight, as we're told there is no sprinkler system in the building. Firefighters were able to rescue residents and pets; however several pets died when the fire got so bad, emergency personnel had to evacuate. One firefighter was hurt and taken to the hospital for treatment. No update on his condition.

"It was a lot of smoke at first coming out of the top of the building and then probably within ten minutes the roof was on fire, pretty high flames," said Benton Lamm. "The flames were so big I could feel the heat across the street."

This is the third fire at the Honey Tree Apartments in less than a year. There was a fire there in June, 2009 and another in March of 2009 that displaced about 24 people. It was ruled accidental.
