Appomattox murder suspect Speight hires lawyers

APPOMATTOX, VA (AP) - The suspect in the slayings of 8 people in Virginia has hired two Roanoke attorneys.

Appomattox County prosecutor Darrel Puckett says Christopher Speight has retained C.J. Covati and Neil Horn. The lawyers did not immediately return phone messages Wednesday.

Speight is charged with last week's slaying of his sister, Lauralee Sipe. The case was transferred Wednesday morning from General District Court to Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Puckett said initial jurisdiction rests with the domestic relations court because Speight and Sipe were siblings living in the same home.

Additional charges are expected, and the case probably will wind up in Circuit Court.

The 39-year-old Speight allegedly gunned down eight people and fired at a state police helicopter on January 19th, then hid in the woods until surrendering the next morning. He's being held without bond.
