RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Almost everybody has a cell phone these days and in many cases they've replaced land lines. Now one company is giving away free cell phone service so nearly everyone can stay connected.

"It used to not be a necessity," said cell phone user, Jamie Donohoe. "Now cell phones kind of are and if you can't afford one I think it should be made available for you to get one."

Assurance Wireless by Virgin Mobile, is offering free cell phone service to Virginia residents of lower income households. Here in the Commonwealth, more than 650,000 people are eligible. To qualify you must receive government aide including: Medicaid, food stamps, Supplemental Security Income, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Or if your household income is around $29,000 for a family of four or about $14,000 or a single person household.

"There are a lot of people out there who are really hurting...older people...poor people," said cell phone user, Herb O'Connor, "They can't afford it, in case of emergencies, they should have a cell phone."

If you go over your 200 minutes, you'll pay 20 cents per minute and text messages are 15 cents each.
