Hazmat crew responds to county dump

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - The Chesterfield County dump is back open after a Hazmat incident brought firefighters to the scene.

A Hazmat team responded to the public disposal site in the northern part of the county around 11:00 Saturday morning.

That's where citizens can bring household chemicals.

Workers then store them in 55 gallon drums until they can be picked up.

But Saturday morning, something went wrong.

"Apparently they added too much chemical to one of the drums," said Chesterfield Battalion Chief Vince Urquhart. "There was some type of reaction. Pressure built up in the drum and the drum swelled. No leak of chemical."

Firefighters relieved the pressure in the drum and pumped out some of the chemicals.

Firefighters aren't sure exactly what was inside.

No one was injured in the incident.
