FORT LEE, VA (WWBT) - A group of Fort Lee soldiers are now in Haiti helping with the relief effort as the damaged island recovers from a massive and devastating earthquake.
Several of the deployed soldiers are with a mortuary affairs unit. The others are part of a water purification team.
The group deployed earlier this week. Officials said the group will remain in Haiti as long as they're needed.
"They're currently assessing what things look like on the ground as far as processing human remains in Haiti – American citizens that may have perished," said Colonel Marcus Cherry, 49th Group Commander.
Fort Lee officials say they're honored to a part of the relief effort.
