HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Three people are found dead inside a burning Henrico home. Tonight, investigators are searching for answers.
The blaze broke out just after eight o'clock Friday morning in the 1700 block of Debbie Lane. It took crews nearly three hours to get the fire under control.
The fire damage to the one story house is extensive. More devastating -- the deadly discovery made inside. Investigators recovered three adult bodies from the home; one female and two males. Although police have not identified the bodies, neighbors say they know the family who called this house home.
"They're a tight group. They're friends with the neighborhood," said neighbor Jemuel Thompson. "They're beautiful people, they were outdoor people, they like to go hunting and fishing and things like that."
One neighbor says he often took walks with the family.
"Nice people... Ordinary people as far as I know. Never caused any trouble," said Elon Moyer.
It was around eight o'clock Friday morning when neighbors noticed heavy smoke pouring from the house on Debbie Lane.
"So we ran to the door and started banging hard. We didn't hear anybody in there, so we kicked the door," said Daronte Brown, neighbor.
When the door flew open Daronte Brown says the thick smoke knocked him back.
"We couldn't get in there - so we started yelling in the house to see if anybody was awake, but nobody said anything," he said.
Nearly a dozen fire trucks responded to the blaze. It took crews three hours to get the fire under control.
"There were hot spots - spaces we couldn't get to. There was a lot of stuff in the house and attic where there were hot spots - we had a hard getting to it to get everything extinguished," said Assistant Fire Marshal William Shumate.
Investigators say pinpointing exactly what happened here could take weeks. The three bodies found in the home are now at the medical examiner's office.
