RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)--Two residents of a Richmond group home are waking up in new rooms because of a fire this weekend. All 82 residents were safely evacuated from the home in the 3200 block of Chamberlayne Avenue.
Firefighters got the call just before 5:30 last night. It was pouring rain at the time.
Richmond Fire and EMS Lynwood Buchanan said they called in GRTC buses to help shelter the residents.
"We had requested GRTC buses and assistance from the Red Cross for the mere fact to get people out of the weather because of the rain. We did not need them once the smoke conditions dissipated on the first floor."
Two displaced residents stayed overnight in a different room at the same building. Investigators are not yet sure what caused the fire.
