RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)--Richmonders are joining the rest of our nation in reaching out to help Haiti. The call center at the Richmond Red Cross was buzzing this weekend. It took 500 calls on Saturday alone.
The Red Cross facility here in Richmond is not set up to handle food or clothing donations. Mark Whiting of the Greater Richmond American Red Cross says monetary donations are most important right now.
"We need the monetary support of the community because we have experts on the ground that will tell the red cross exactly what they need and how much they need. The money allows us to replenish those supplies," Whiting says.
Around the country, the American Red Cross has raised more than $87 million for the relief efforts. In fact, when we opened our phone lines to you last Friday morning, just our viewers raised more than $11,000!
