RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – It wasn't a planned New Year's Eve celebration, still a large crowd turned out to ring in the New Year in Carytown.
The curious flocked to Carytown last night to see if the giant ball would rise above the Byrd Theater even though the big New Year's Eve celebration had been canceled. It did to the delight of many.
Richmond police kept their mobile surveillance equipment in the area to keep an eye on things. But the crowd wasn't the same as in years' past. Still, people made the best of their night.
"I did not want to drink and drive tonight. I want to go out and have fun and this is the best way to do it without getting in trouble," said Fan resident Rob Mireles.
Others kept it a low key night and went to the movies instead of the bars.
