Driver dies in Louisa crash involving tractor trailer
LOUISA, VA (WWBT) - A Charlottesville man is dead following a two-vehicle crash in Louisa County early this morning.
At 6:10 a.m., Virginia State Police were called to the scene on Interstate 64 westbound, approximately 1.5 miles west of Route 208, Courthouse Road near the town of Louisa.
A 2006 Freightliner tractor-trailer was stopped on the right shoulder of the roadway when a 2006 Ford Mustang lost control striking the tractor-trailer in the rear. The tractor-trailer driver had stopped to assist another motorist that crashed. The driver of the Mustang, 49-year-old John M. Del-Vitto of Charlottesville, died at the scene. Del-Vitto was wearing his safety belt.
The driver of the Freightliner, Jesse J. Owens Jr., was not injured in the crash. Owens, 30, was inside his vehicle at the time of the crash.
The crash is still under investigation and weather was a factor. There are no charges pending.
