4 teenagers died in traffic crashes over the holiday weekend

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia State Police released information on traffic fatalities over the holiday weekend.

More people were killed in traffic crashes this year during the four-day Christmas statistical counting period, December 24-December 27, than last year.  Ten people lost their lives in 2009 and six people were killed in 2008.  In 2008, the counting period was 5 days.

Four of the ten people killed were teenagers.  A 19-year-old female and a 16-year-old female were not wearing their seatbelts when they were thrown from their overturned vehicle on Christmas Eve in Prince Edward County.

On Friday, an 18-year-old man was killed in Campbell County when his vehicle ran off the road and overturned in Campbell County.  He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Also on Friday in Newport News, a 17-year-old driver was killed when his vehicle struck another vehicle head-on.  The 53-year-old driver of the second vehicle died at the scene.

The remaining crash fatalities occurred in Accomack, Henrico, Fairfax and Rockbridge counties.  None of the individuals were wearing seatbelts.
