HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - If you're still looking for a last-minute way to deck the halls, you don't have to make a trip to the store.
There are cheap and easy ways to make natural decorations.
Hanover county's Carolyn Peart can make beautiful, handmade swags and wreaths in no time. She might not know the right name for all the plants she uses but she knows how to make them look great.
"I just like to be outside. I like to use things," she said.
The thrill isn't just the end result, it's the walk in the brisk December air with clippers in hand, searching for something that will work.
"Anything that's green, and you like it but here's what we have a lot of Virginia pine, hooly, hemlock," she said.
The key to Carolyn's creations: wire. With that and some fresh greenery. You can easily make a wreath. An easier task is oholly these swags to hang on the door
A few twists of wire, and just like the song -- some boughs of holly.
"The pine to the hemlock -- so you don't have a huge wad -- and you stick it together and put a bow on it. That is it," she said.
Carolyn's classic creations fit with her historic home. The decorations she makes today likely were here 100 years ago.
"I think there's so much about the past that helps us guide our future. It makes me feel good," Carolyn said.
But you can also enjoy the season if you are a city dweller. This is a salad dressing bottle, water, red food coloring, add some fresh greenery and you are done. Your only trouble will be finding the greenery you need.
If you are in a subdivision, Carolyn says find out who maintains the grounds. They'll probably be happy to help you out. Or just ask a friend.
I do not advocate that you take clippers and go to the various parks and just trim at will but lots and lots of people will help you.
It's good for the environment and an authentic way to decorate your home for very little money.
