'Tis the season for extra patrols

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Don't be surprised if you see a few extra state troopers on the road this weekend.

Operation Air, Land and Speed continues this weekend.

The program is aimed at reducing speeding, reckless driving, and other traffic violations.

This weekend's efforts will focus on I-66 and I-64.

State Police say the operation is necessary because people continue to break the laws.

"There will be unfortunately thousands of speeding tickets issued," said VA State Police Sgt. Lee Elliott. "Expect lots of reckless driving, drunk drivers, child restraint violations, seatbelt citations issued."

The last time I-64 was targeted, State Police issued nearly 1,800 speeding tickets over a two day period.

This weekend's effort runs through Sunday if the weather cooperates.
