Residents advised to boil water following water main break

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - Battlefield Green residents urged to boil water following a water main break Monday morning.

The water main broke around 5 a.m. in the 8300 block of Old Cavalry Drive in Mechanicsville.  Approximately ten feet of the water line cracked underneath the ground.  The water started bubbling toward the surface causing part of the road to collapse.

About 275 homes did not have water but crews expected the water service to be restored by noon.

The Hanover County Department of Utilites are advising residents of the Battlefield Green subdivision to boil tap water for one minute and let cool before using for drinking, cooking or making ice.

Another alternative is to use bottled water.

Failure to follow the advisory could result in stomach or intestinal illness.

Authorities do not expect to lift the order before Wednesday and will notify residents when boiling is no longer required.
