NEW KENT, VA (WWBT) – Streams look like lakes. Backyard chimes too tangled by wind to make a sound. Ida's remnants are certainly making a powerful presence in New Kent County.

"It seems every time we have wind storm or something like that - it seems to cut off and doesn't want to cut back in," said Rodney Omary.

Dominion Power work crews lined route 60 for most of the day going from power pole to power pole trying to bring back the electricity.

Generators were roaring at most homes we visited in the county. Most say generators are now a necessity in these parts.

"My wife she ain't going to take it too long without having some TV or something on so I went and put on my rain coat to go out here and hook it up," said John Thomas.

Ida may not have been ideal, but some say we'll ultimately be better for it.

"We need the rain. So it's a little inconvenient for some but I think in the long run everybody will benefit," said Marvin Collins.
