RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – With the SunTrust Richmond Marathon coming up Saturday, participants have been preparing for the long-distance challenge any way they can.

For anyone who wants to run a marathon, it may be difficult to know where to start in terms of training. That's where the SportsBackers marathon training team comes into play.

What began as a group of a few hundred people has grown to well over 1,000, and for all of them the goal is the same -- make it to the finish line of Saturday's marathon or half-marathon successfully and in one piece.

The team has been gathering on Saturday and Sunday mornings at The Diamond before hitting the streets of Richmond.

It's part of a 24-week program that includes a detailed written schedule for runners to follow, personal guidance from experienced coaches, and of course, the comradery that comes when one goes through the process with other people who are also looking to achieve the same thing.

One of the reasons for the large number of participants has been the addition of the half-marathon training team, which also has been meeting at The Diamond every weekend.
