PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - The man who was wounded is charged with breaking and entering in Petersburg. It happened on the 700 block of Ransom Street. Family members of the man who was shot and killed say they're just looking for answers:
The homeowner of the property says around seven o'clock this morning two men tried to break in. Her nephew was home alone.
"He was watching TV. He heard someone shake the backdoor and he got up," she said.
She says at some point her nephew grabbed a gun and fired several shots through the door.
"They were stopped - they needed to be stopped"
The two men took off. A short time later, and only a block away, a man was found dead in a yard on Harrison Street. He had been shot. Family members have identified him as 25 year old Harry Stevenson.
"He got his certification in computer software. I don't know I'm just shocked. I don't know the details of the story, I'm just shocked right now," said Mike Trotter.
A second man with a gunshot wound, identified as 20 year Shamondray Chavis, was also located. Although police are not confirming that the shootings and attempted home break in are related - they have charged Chavis with attempted breaking and entering.
The homeowner on Ransom Street, who asked us not to reveal her identity, says her home has been burglarized several times, most recently on Friday.
"I'm hoping that it sends a message that the homeowner was tired. I was tired and that's why we went on to purchase something to protect our property. We didn't have anything at first but we were just tired of being broken into," she said.
It's unclear at this point if the man who fired those shots will be charged.
