RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – The SunTrust Richmond Marathon is set for Saturday morning. A record number of runners will hit the pavement this year and we caught up with one of the oldest runners in the marathon.
George Hastings is 71. The retired teacher and grandfather of two has always wanted to run a marathon and says now is the time to try to do it.
You can find Hastings running near the James river.
He's been training for the Richmond marathon since the first week in June.
He took part in the marathon training program. A few weeks ago, George ran 20 miles with the team.
Three years ago Hastings was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After successful surgery, he was back to running and he hasn't stopped since.
George wants senior citizens to know they can do just about anything, including running a marathon.
Hastings credits his wife of 25 years for her support of his running.
