ARCHIVE: Police converge on Henrico gas stations -- in error

ARCHIVE: Oct 22, 2002

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – This is the worst possible time to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. That certainly the case for two immigrants.

Today negotiators and phone tracers wait at the sniper task force with two phone numbers known to the sniper routed there.

Yesterday a plea after technical problems with a first phone call.

"The person you called could not hear everything that you said. The audio was unclear and we want to get it right. Call us back so we can clearly understand."

Police say that letter found in the woods behind the Ponderosa in Ashland details a request from the sniper and prompted surveillance of this phone booth in Henrico County.

For eight hours investigators combed an Exxon and Citgo gas station after hauling a white mini van driven by two hispanic men.

Police also confirmed connection with the shooting in Ashland and the others in Northern Virginia.

We can and do confirm at this time that the ballistics evidence recovered during our investigation has been matched with the other shooting cases.
