Job fair draws small lines, frustrated people

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Another job fair brings out the unemployed, but many are leaving disappointed and without a job. It seems that is something that is becoming the norm these days. We talk with several people who say they are finding nothing full time, only part time work that doesn't last long enough.

It may be surprising to you that the lines at this job fair are not as long as you've seen previously. Still, hundreds and hundreds of people are looking for that next job to get off the unemployment line.

It's about putting America back to work and this nationwide tour made it's way to Chesterfield.

But mother of three Veronica Jefferson is growing frustrated with job fairs in general.

"I hope in the back of my mind I'll leave here with a job or somebody will call me and get an interview," says Veronica.

The same is true for others. "It's pointless to come all the way out here. I'm from hopewell. Coming to Richmond, you think you're going to get a job and you don't," adds Jasmine Capers.

Right now, it looks like the number of people looking for a job is about to go up. Despite good economic news last week, President Obama expects the unemployment rate to increase to double digits.

"The economy is really bad. I don't know what's going on. It's hard. Even people with degrees can't get jobs. But I'm still trying," says Jasmine.

At the job fair, several colleges were on hand, trying to recruit people for new degrees and a new future.

Stan Burge is already on board with that plan. "You get comfortable in one type of job and you get stuck there. That's where I was. That's why I went to school," says Stan.

Whether it's school -- or simply a job -- these hungry hunters are down, but not out.

"I'm going to continue looking. If they have a job fair, I'm going to be there.

Despite those frustrations, here's a reason to be hopeful. These job fairs across America have put more than 10,000 people back to work and the hope is that continues in the coming months.
