Teen charged in ax attack could be tried as adult

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - Hanover County authorities have released the name of the student charged with hitting another student in the face with an ax.

The suspect in the case is Omar Abdelaal, 16, and he has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding.  Hanover County Commonwealth Attorney Trip Chalkley said the county has surveillance video of the attack. Chalkley said you can see in the video the suspect remove the ax covering and attack the victim from the front.

The incident happened this past Friday night near Lee-Davis high school. Police say two groups of teens were arguing in the parking lot of the Tractor Supply Co. on Mechanicsville Turnpike.

Police say Abdelaal and his friends went inside the store and the victim and his friends followed. At some point, the suspect allegedly grabbed the ax of the shelf and attacked the victim.

Chalkley said he has not made a decision yet on whether to try Abdelaal as an adult.

Abdelaal will be back in court on November 13 for a preliminary hearing.
