Get Hired Virginia: Speed networking for jobs

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Have you been going to job fairs looking for a new job, but not having any luck? An event on Tuesday may be for you. It's called Get Hired Virginia. It's a new form of job networking.

Organizers Ignite Speed Networking and Interview Angel say Get Hired Virginia will be an opportunity for job seekers to meet recruiters and entrepreneurs face to face. It's called speed networking and it works a lot of speed dating.

Marketing professional and job seeker Paul McDonell says it can be hard to get face-to-face time with hiring managers at crowded job fairs. "A lot of the people representing the companies were sending you to their website."

That's why he got involved with Get Hired Virginia. Said McDonell, "The job seekers will be meeting primarily with recruiters with the people they need to connect with, because the recruiters are the ones who know what job opportunities are out there."

Speed networking is like speed dating. Explained organizer Brent Peterson, "Each table will have one of these great little hour glasses, actually one minute glasses, and ensures that each person has one minute to make their pitch."

After everyone in a group has talked, a cowbell will move them to the next table and where they'll do it again. What should you say in one minute? Your experience, skills, interests, and, said Peterson, "What are they passionate about? If they're not passionate about what they do for a living, chances are they're not going to convince someone else they are as well."

At a reception at the end, you can talk further with contacts you make.

And when you get that job interview, Peterson's company and event sponsor, Interview Angel, also offers a workbook that shows you what you can say, and what questions to ask, to help you get the job. Said Peterson, "This outlines all the information you need to know about any organization before you sit down with them for a job interview."

Get Hired Virginia is Tuesday, October 27 at Meadow Event Park in Doswell from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 pm. For $20 admission, organizers say job seekers can expect to make at least 50 professional contacts. Attendees are requested to pre-register online.
